Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Do I need to be an experienced triathlete?
Not at all. The Sprint distance is designed to be accessible — if you can swim 750m, ride a mountain bike, and run 5km, you're ready. The course is challenging but not extreme. Every year hundreds of first-timers complete this race and have the time of their lives.
What MTB skill level do I need?
The bike course is challenging but fair. While we use the most accessible trails available in Whistler, some riders will still find them technical. We’ve had athletes in their 60s and 70s successfully complete both Sprint and Championship distances.

The course includes:
  • Gravel/dirt roads
  • Gravel double track
  • Green & Blue singletrack (Zappa Trails)
  • Wooden bridges, roots, rocks and short tech sections
  • A short hike-a-bike climb for all Sprint & Championship athletes
Pre-riding is strongly encouraged if possible. We will also offer optional bike clinics before and on race weekend.
Can I rent a mountain bike in Whistler?
Yes! Several Whistler bike shops offer rental packages. Try Arbutus Routes.

We recommend booking well in advance as availability fills up in September. Make sure to specify you're racing and need a trail/XC style bike.
Can I race as a team relay?
Yes. The Team Challenge is a highlight of the event. Teams of 2 or 3 complete the Championship distance, with each member covering at least one discipline. Relay exchanges take place in transition.
Is the event sanctioned and does it qualify for Worlds?
Yes. Whistler X Tri is a Triathlon BC sanctioned race and an official qualifier for the 2027 Multisport World Championships in Edmonton, Alberta.

Full qualification details: Triathlon BC qualification info.

As a Triathlon BC sanctioned race, Whistler X Tri will adhere to official ITU rules, which can be found at World Triathlon Competition Rules 2026. It is every competitor's responsibility to know the rules. Please reach out to us if you have any questions: rd@endurancespecific.com
Do I need Triathlon BC insurance?
Yes. All athletes must hold either an annual Triathlon BC membership or a one-day TriBC licence purchased during registration. All memberships and one-day licences are validated prior to race day.
Athlete Code of Conduct
All athletes are expected to:
  • Practice good sportsmanship at all times
  • Be responsible for their own safety and the safety of others
  • Treat other competitors, officials, volunteers and spectators with respect and courtesy
  • Inform race officials after withdrawing from the race
  • Be responsible for knowing and staying on the course
  • Not have bare torsos, headsets, headphones or glass containers on course
Will the race be cancelled if weather is bad?
Whistler mountain weather can change quickly. Triathlon BC officials and the Race Director will adjust the course if required for safety. This could include modified distances, a delayed start, or a duathlon format.

We have never cancelled a race or a swim.

We have Whistler Outdoor Medical at race HQ and on course, plus a professional swim safety team.
Are there awards?
Yes.

  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Overall Male & Female — Sprint & Championship
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Age Group Male & Female — Sprint & Championship
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Youth (14–15) Male & Female
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Juniors (16–19) Male & Female
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Relay Teams — teams of 2 & 3 compete against each other
There are no awards for the Kids race U14. Kids U14 will receive finisher medals.

The fastest team takes home a locally made one-of-a-kind trophy.
What does my registration include?
Your entry includes:
  • Custom high-quality swag
  • Race swim cap (mandatory for race)
  • Whistler X Tri sticker
  • Unique finisher medal
  • Age-group awards eligibility
  • Giant Moguls cookie (a Whistler institution)
  • Post-race food & Athletic Brewing NA beer
  • Professional chip timing
  • Lucky prize draw entry
What is your cancellation and transfer policy?
Entries are non-refundable and non-deferrable.

Transfers to another athlete are permitted until the posted transfer deadline via RaceRoster.
Distance changes (up or down) are available until midnight Sept 10.

If the event must be modified or cancelled due to weather, wildfire, safety concerns, or other uncontrollable factors, refunds are not available.

Optional RaceRoster refund protection is available at registration.
Package pick-up
See the schedule above for all package pick-up times.
We strongly recommend Sunday racers pick up Saturday.

Photo ID is required.
Only the registered athlete may collect their race package.
Where do I leave extra gear?
There is space around the transition perimeter for non-essential gear bags.

Do not leave valuables — we are not responsible for lost items.

Lost property inquiries can be sent to the race team. Unclaimed items after 30 days will be donated locally.
Are spectators and dogs welcome?
Absolutely. Lost Lake is a fantastic spectator venue. Swim exit, transition and finish are all spectator-friendly.

Dogs are not permitted on Lost Lake Beach but are allowed in the park on leash. An off-leash area (Canine Cove) is located ~400m north of the beach.
Are Lost Lake trails closed during the race?
No. Lost Lake trails remain open to the public. Please ride and run aware — we mark the course extensively and notify the public in advance.
What will the water temperature be and are wetsuits required?
Expected temperature: 14–18°C. Wetsuits will almost certainly be mandatory for adults. Final rulings are made race morning using World Triathlon temperature guidelines.

If water conditions are unsafe (extremely unlikely), the race may convert to a duathlon.

Kids races: afternoon swims are short and water temps tend to be warmer. Wetsuits recommended but not mandatory.
Is the swim a mass start?
Yes. One wave for Sprint and one for Championship.

Athletes may self-seed: faster swimmers to the front, nervous/new swimmers to the back. Kids races use separate age-group starts.
Are there aid stations?
Bike: unmanned water-only station at Hydro Hill (no cups).

Run:
  • Sprint: one aid station
  • Championship: two aid stations
Aid stations include electrolyte, water, and Red Bull.
