The Race

Where Champions Begin

Saturday September 19 is dedicated entirely to the kids and youth of Whistler X Tri. Every child who lines up gets a proper race experience — age-appropriate distances, their own swim start, their own bike and run course, and a real finish line with a crowd cheering them home.

This isn't a "fun run." It's a real triathlon, scaled thoughtfully for young athletes. We believe kids deserve the same race-day energy as the adults — and our youngest athletes often generate the biggest cheers.

All finishers receive a medal. Youth 14-15 yrs also have Age group podiums for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The whole family is welcome to spectate, cheer, and celebrate.

No Triathlon BC membership is required for kids race athletes. Just show up, get body-marked, and race.

Registration includes:

  • Whistler X Tri Swim Cap
  • T-Shirt*
  • Finishers Medal
  • Professional timing
  • Awards for Youth 14-15 category only**
  • Post race Pizza, cookies, fruit & more
  • & swag from our presenting sponsor Jim Pattison North Shore Subaru

*If registration is AFTER Aug 21st their t-shirt size can't be guaranteed. Enter early to avoid disappointment.
**There are no awards for ages 5–13.

What to Expect

🏅

Finisher Medals

Every single finisher crosses the line and receives a custom Whistler X Tri finisher medal. Not a ribbon — a proper medal, the same as the adults. Something to wear all the way home.

🏆

Podium Ceremony

Youth 14-15 yrs age group top 3 male and female receive a full podium experience — step up, hear your name called, and hold your award high. It's a moment they'll talk about for years.

👕

Race T-Shirt

All registered kids receive a Whistler X Tri race t-shirt in their race kit. Pick it up at packet collection on race day. Kids love wearing them to school on Monday.

📣

Huge Crowd Energy

The kids race always draws the biggest cheers. Spectators, parents, volunteers — everyone comes out to support. The finish chute is the loudest moment of the entire weekend.

🌊

Kayak & Paddleboard Safety

Kayak & Paddle board safety in the water. Lifeguards in the water and on shore. Age-appropriate distances in calm Lost Lake. Young athletes are always safe, visible, and supported throughout the swim.

FAQs & Important Info

Kids and Youth Race Guide →

Your child's age as of Dec 31st, 2026 will determine their category. We can be flexible and drop kids down a category (e.g. a 9 year old into the 5–8 category) if you feel that distance would be better for them. Please email us before race day to organise this. We are unable to move kids up a category.

This age group races with the adults on Sunday in the Sprint distance race. When registering, make sure you select the Junior 16–19 option to receive the lower price.

Since swim distances are short and races are held in the afternoon when air temperatures are higher, wetsuits are not mandatory — only recommended. Any wetsuit will work (surf wetsuits included). Water temperature varies year to year and could be anywhere between 14°C–22°C (57°F–72°F).

We do not give awards for ages 5–13 for reasons we consider important. Triathlon BC competition rules prohibit podium positions for athletes 11 and under. More broadly, for most kids it's a huge accomplishment just to start and finish a triathlon — all finishers receive a medal so they can feel proud of their achievement.

The goal of this event is to introduce kids to a sport they'll love for years to come. Results will be posted online after the race.

Yes please! We love having as many volunteers as possible for the kids race to make it as safe and fun as possible.

Race Day

Kids Courses

All courses take place in and around beautiful Lost Lake Park. Each age group has its own purpose-designed swim, bike and run tailored to their distance and ability.

5–8 Yrs
🏊 25m 🚵 2km 🏃 1km
Swim — 25m

The 5–8 year olds swim approximately 25m horizontal to the shoreline in waist-deep water. Those who want to swim can swim — and those who need to can stand up at any point. It's fun, safe, and confidence-building.

Bike — 2km

After transition, kids turn right onto Lost Lake Loop for an out-and-back of approximately 2km. Parents of younger kids are welcome to follow alongside and help. Marshals, traffic cones, and signage guide the course throughout.

Run — 1km

Exiting transition, the 5–8 year olds turn left onto Lost Lake Loop for a simple out-and-back of approximately 1km — flat, friendly, and cheered all the way to the finish.

9–13 Yrs
🏊 100m 🚵 4km 🏃 2km
Swim — 100m

The 9–13 year olds swim 2 × 50m laps in Lost Lake. Note: distance may be reduced to 50m if lake temperatures are deemed too cold on race day.

Bike — ~4km

The 9–13 riders get a taste of the adult course. After mounting up, they tackle the short but steep Upper Panorama Connector before flowing through Tin Pants. From there they climb Peaches en Regalia and ride Dinah Moe Humm, Disco Boy, and Fountain of Love — then back on Tin Pants and down Upper Panorama before turning onto Lost Lake Trail and back to transition.

Run — ~2km

The older kids run the opening section of the adult course. They head up Molly Hogan until reaching the turn to Grand Wazoo on the right, then follow Grand Wazoo all the way back down to the finish chute.

14–15 Yrs
🏊 300m 🚵 8km 🏃 3km
Swim — 300m

Youth 14–15 complete a 3-lap swim course with a beach exit between laps, each lap approximately 100m for a total of 300m in Lost Lake.

Bike — ~8km

The Youth bike course is 2 laps of the Kids 9–13 course, making it approximately 8km. On the second lap, athletes follow signage along Tin Pants to begin lap two. After coming off Fountain of Love the second time, they follow Tin Pants to the lap-two start point then take a left onto Lower Panorama (signed) back to Lost Lake Park and T2.

Run — ~3km

A one-lap loop of approximately 3km. Athletes leave transition turning left onto Lost Lake Loop for a 500m out-and-back, then turn left up Molly Hogan. From there they take a right onto Grand Wazoo, following it all the way back to Lost Lake Park and the finish line.
